Sanskrit was launched as general course in the initial years and gradually as per increasing demand among students for honours of this subject, college authority introduced honours in Sanskrit. From the very beginning, students had affinity to this subject and proved their attraction to this subject by satisfactory results in University Examinations year after year. The department started with Prof. Debaprasad Ghosh (PTT) as HOD, after that Prof. Biswamoy Bera, Dr. Suman Majumdar and Prof. Debalina Banerjee joined this department as guest lecturers. In February 2017, Prof. Ishita Dey joined as HOD as well as full time faculty of this department.
At present, the department of Sanskrit offers both Honours and General course to students. The student strength is very good in this department. In 2018, the West Bengal State University inaugurated the CBCS curriculum.
The departmentt is enriched through academic activities like teaching grammar, accents, translations etc. apart from syllabus, preparing students for presenting papers in college seminars, power point presentation, involving students to write articles, poems, short stories in college magazine and also involve them in creative activities like wall magazine – “Sanskrita-Saṃrādhanam”. This department is running successfully by the cooperation of all the students of this department, teaching and non teaching staff.
