Sociology Department

Hingalganj Mahavidyalaya

 

Sociology department ensures that the students are given appropriate exposure to modern tools of teaching and learning. At present only General Degree Course is offered in Sociology. Students pursuing Honours in History, Political Science and Geography may choose Sociology as General Course. Besides this, students pursuing B.A/B.Sc General Program may take up Sociology as one of their Core Subjects. The present course runs through Semester system, following Choice Based Credit System under West Bengal State University.

To ensure proper course conduct, lesson plans are drawn systematically. Teachers use modern technological tools, including Audio Visual Tools to promote interest and involvement of students.

The Students actively participate in the learning process through open debates, Group Discussion, Class Presentations and Creative endeavors such as publication of Departmental Wall Magazine.

Program Outcome

 

The Sociology program is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of social life, human behaviour, and institutional dynamics. Through the study of classical and contemporary sociological theories, research methods, and real-world case studies, students gain the ability to critically analyse issues such as inequality, gender, caste, globalization, environment, and social change etc. The program emphasizes the development of analytical thinking, ethical reasoning, and effective communication skills. Graduates will be able to conduct independent research, interpret social data, and apply sociological knowledge to solve problems in diverse fields such as education, public policy, community development, social work, media, and corporate sectors. The program also prepares students for higher studies and encourages active civic engagement and lifelong learning.

 

 

Course Outcome

Semester-1 

Course Outcome: Introducing Sociology 

This foundational course equips students with the tools to understand and analyse human society and social behaviour. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the foundational concepts, scope and significance of sociology as a discipline.
  • Analyse the relationship between sociology, anthropology, and history.
  • Explain key sociological concepts such as society, culture, social structure, socialization, norms, deviance, and law.
  • Examine the processes of socialization and the roles of various social institutions and agencies.
  • Differentiate between integrative and disintegrative social processes.
  • Identify forms of social control and the role of different agencies in maintaining societal norms.
  • Classify various types of social groups and their characteristics.
  • Analyse social stratification and its impact on social mobility and individual life chances.

Semester -II

Course Outcome – Introducing Indian Society – I

This course provides students with a foundational understanding of Indian society, its social institutions, and contemporary social movements. Students will:

  • Understand the diversity and unity of Indian society.
  • Analyse key social institutions like caste, family, and village structures.
  • Critically engage with issues of caste hierarchy, joint family systems, and rural class dynamics.
  • Examine major social movements including those led by farmers, Dalits, and women.
  • Develop informed perspectives on India’s changing social landscape.

 

Semester-III

Course Outcome – Sociological Theory (SOCMIN303T)

Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of major sociological theories, both classical and contemporary. They will:

  • Explore the plurality of sociological perspectives.
  • Understand key theoretical frameworks such as functionalism, conflict theory, interactionism, and feminism.
  • Analyse contributions of major theorists including Parsons, Merton, Ralf Dahrendorf, Coser, Mead, and Blumer.
  • Critically engage with feminist perspectives including liberal, radical, and Marxist feminism.
  • Apply theoretical insights to interpret and evaluate social structures and processes.


Semester-IV

Course Outcome – Gender and Society (SOCMIN404T)

This course equips students with a critical understanding of gender as a key category in sociological analysis. By the end of the course, students will:

  • Understand gender, sex, and sexuality as socially constructed and contested categories.
  • Analyse how ideas of masculinity and femininity are produced and maintained in society.
  • Examine the intersections of gender with class and caste, and how these shape social inequalities.
  • Critically assess the role and impact of resistance movements, particularly the women's movement in India.
