The Department of Philosophy was established in the academic year 2008–2009 under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. Initially, Prof. Tanmoy Pramanik joined the department as a part-time teacher. Later, Prof. Dr. Rajib Ghosh joined as a guest lecturer. Subsequently, Md. Golam Martuja joined the department on 01.10.2016 as an Assistant Professor(Head of the Department).
At present, the department has one substantive Assistant Professor and one State-Aided College Teacher (SACT). After receiving an appointment through the West Bengal College Service Commission, Dr. Ghosh left the department in 2024. He is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Sishuram Das College, South 24 Parganas.

Program Outcome
The Programme in Philosophy equips students with comprehensive knowledge of the discipline and its societal impact, fostering critical and analytical thinking skills essential for forming reasoned conclusions. Students develop strong analytical reasoning, enabling them to evaluate arguments, organize information, and reach valid conclusions. The programme also trains them in logical problem-solving, even in unfamiliar situations, and promotes cooperative values, teamwork, and leadership. A strong research orientation is developed through inquiry-based learning, along with digital literacy skills necessary for navigating the modern digital world. Lastly, the inclusion of moral and social philosophy cultivates ethical awareness and a deep sense of social responsibility, preparing learners to contribute meaningfully to society.

Semester – I
Paper: Epistemology & Metaphysics & Ethics: Indian Perspective
Students will gain knowledge about various aspects of Indian philosophy through this course. For example, they will have the opportunity to learn in detail about topics such as the concept of ethics in Indian philosophy, the idea of the Supreme Being, and the means of attaining knowledge.
Semester – II
Paper: Epistemology & Metaphysics & Ethics: Western Perspective
Through this course, students will gain knowledge about various theories related to the origin of knowledge. They will also develop an understanding of different theories of reality, such as realism and idealism. Additionally, they will acquire a basic understanding of the concepts of causality and substance, as well as knowledge of ethics.
Semester – III
Paper: Logic
Through this course, students gain knowledge about various aspects of logic.This course plays an important role in developing a logical mindset in students.
Semester – IV
Paper: Ethics: Indian & Western
Through this course, students gain knowledge about various aspects of ethics in both Indian and Western philosophy. For example, from Western philosophy, they can learn in detail about issues related to punishment, and from Indian philosophy, they can gain an understanding of the path to liberation in life.
