Journey of the department of History dates back to the beginning of the college in 2005. Being one of the compulsory subjects in B.A. Examination, History was among the oldest departments of the college.
It was initially entrusted with the responsibility of preparing students for B.A. General Examination, under the university of Calcutta, to which the college was affiliated. The department was at first started with Prof. Udaya Das (PTT) in July 2005 and later enriched by the recruitment of full time faculty member Prof. Nupur Datta . In the year 2007, with sanction from the Government of West Bengal, and approval from the University of Calcutta, the History department introduced its Honours course in addition to the General course as already offered. Addressing the growing need for teaching staff Prof. Rita Paul (PTT) was recruited in 2010. In 2011 the college got the affiliation under the West Bengal State University, Barasat.
Despite the students of the college belonging to very poor economic background, many students from the inception are doing well in their studies and many of them have been able to pursue master degree after completion of their graduation.
Currently the department offers History Honours and General courses, under the CBCS curriculum of 2018, History Core Courses and Generic Electives are offered. The department is fortunate enough to get a new full time faculty member Prof Susanta Roy, who has joined the department in 2017.
All the faculty members are very serious and dedicated to the welfare of the students.
The department is regularly engaged in several academic and co curricular activities like using ICT as mode of teaching, students’ seminar, showing historical films and documentaries, publishing their departmental wall magazine “ Itikatha” etc. All the faculty members of the department want their students to be established, so they give utmost priority to their performance.
